IMTA Statement on Delay to GB Import Controls

IMTA recently surveyed members on readiness for 1st July and there were significant concerns about readiness on the EU side including with regard to veterinary capacity for certification and how this would add further pressure to supply chains.

On the announcement of the delay to the introduction of full SPS checks and introduction of certification for imports from the EU IMTA CEO Katie Doherty said “Though I know some will be frustrated about yet another delay, I know that with all the current supply chain pressures that for many this delay will be welcome. There has been slightly more notice than the usual last-minute announcements which will be appreciated by industry. IMTA is the UK trade association representing importers and exporters of meat so are well-placed to work closely with government to ensure that UK import controls for meat from both EU and Rest of World are fit for purpose. It will be essential that government works both with industry and Port Health Authorities on their Target Operating Model”

The delay will allow companies time to focus on preparing for the phasing out of the current UK customs computer system CHIEF and full move to the Customs Declaration Service (CDS) for imports in September.

IMTA have long called for electronic certification for imports both from the EU and rest of world and the delay will allow for this to be implemented. We want to work with government to achieve this and its Border 2025 strategy. We also urgently need digitisation of certification for our exports to the EU which would go some way to alleviating some of the additional administrative burden that has hit exporters since January of 2021.
